One cardinal rule of marriage should never be forgotten: GIVE LITTLE, GIVE SELDOM, AND ABOVE ALL, GIVE GRUDGINGLY. Otherwise what could have been a proper marriage could become an orgy of sexual lust.

-Ruth Smythers, from The Madison Institute Newsletter, Fall Issue, 1894

I have found that the key to a proper marriage is to read the above quote with absolute irony and do the exact opposite in all aspects of your relationship: Give more than expected, give often, and above all, give generously.

While she was obviously referring only to things of the sexual nature, I also like to extend my reworked version to every corner of my relationship. This is particularly true when it comes to things like getting up off the couch to get love your a glass of water or a cookie: Do it often, do it lots, and do it happily. I swear to you it’s the key to a happy relationship.
